Description
STAR TRAILS OVER SAGUARO, Saguaro National Park, Arizona, US. Towering saguaro against desert night sky, this giant cacti is the universal symbol of the American west. And Tucson, Arizona is home to this nation's largest cacti. These majestic plants, found only in a small portion of the United States, are protected by Saguaro National Park, to the east and west of the modern city of Tucson. The 92,000-acre (37,000 ha) park consists of two separate areas—the Tucson Mountain District about 10 miles (16 km) west of the city of Tucson and the Rincon Mountain District about 10 miles (16 km) east of the city—that preserve Sonoran Desert landscapes, fauna, and flora, including the giant saguaro cactus. Congress combined both Districts to form the national park in 1994.
